In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., University Activities Board (UAB) hosted "Showtyme," a free event held on Michigan State University's campus on Saturday. Performance winners and selected audience members walked away with prizes. The event focused on student diversity at MSU. An event judge, Kat Cooper, said, "I am amazed at the diversity of talent and at MSU we have a way to share it. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream for everyone to be equal. MSU gives students the opportunity to share. I think he would be proud."

Runners line up to take place in the 1st Annual Lansing For Haiti 5K Run/Walk at Great Lakes Christian College. First place winner Titus Lorape with a time of 15:29 stands barefoot next to the others runners. Lansing for Haiti is a group of Lansing area churches who have partnered with Cite' Soleil, Haiti, one of the poorest slums in the world and hardest hit areas of the Jan. 12th, 2010 earthquake. The annual 5K took place on the earthquake's weekend anniversary with special guests from Haiti.

Lansing resident and artist Julian Van Dyke and his daughter Carrigan, 4, paint part of a mural at the Black Child and Family Institute, 835 W. Genesee St. in Lansing on Monday morning, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The mural is part of a series by the Lansing Area Mural Project, which creates murals painted by community members and put up around Lansing, like at BCFI and the Ingham County Youth Center. The project is the result of a $10,000 grant given to the Arts Council of Greater Lansing and will conclude in April.
